APRIL IN REVIEW

April in Review 2022

April was a jolt of surprise. Not always for the better. Truly a month that started out very strong turned into something that was a bit all over the place. This month expanded on sounds in so many different directions all of which artists are trying to pre set the early summer sound. Not all that we’re truly successful inputs.

This month I solely focused on albums due to my personal life so I hope everyone understands! That being said let’s dive into the albums we did receive!

Camila | Familia

Familia is Camila Cabellos third solo album and fortunately it has received some very nice praise. It’s impressive an artist so well knows how to ride with their talents. I can’t say an album hasn’t been done like this before but it is a perfect blend of multiple Latin rooted sounds with simple pop. This continuously proves that Camila can adapt her sound and create overall very nice pop music to listen too and as long as she is making albums pop is not dead. I think it’s been interesting to see how pop does evolve and what it means exactly but to blend her music with Spanish i fly eve was just completely beautiful. You have reggaeton, tango, mariachi and so much more included in this massive record. The English slower tracks are simplified but also enjoyable. Truthfully this record excels even tho not every song is my preferred listening choice as I do enjoy about half the album overall.

Omar Apollo | Ivory

This months magnum opus. A record that is truly impressive as it just grows with each listen. The 16 track album acts as Omar apollos Debut record even tho we have had multiple near album leads. His record also has so many influences pulled into it but this record succeeds as each time you listen you enjoy it more and more. I never doubted Omar as he announced this particular project as the three tracks alone and current dis or health has already proven his massive talent to create a record. It’s truly a cinematic work. I feel like I have so much to say yet so little as the album speaks for itself. Also I’m not sure of the overwhelming amount of music we have distracted me from being in the particular mood for Omar or if I was expecting something grand in particular but there is a slight ou bc that I felt was missing. What Camilas album did impressively was release the o bio is tracks to release and keep the juicy flair hidden for the album listen and with Omar there were also so many tracks that made me feel the same way about the record but I also felt some of the songs were either meant to be hidden before pre released to be experienced within the album release. I am not sure overall other than the initial listen felt like I wanted a bigger punch than I received but it was a pretty damn good punch to begin with.

Swedish house Mafia | Paradise Again

EDM albums like this are difficult to read because EDM is truly just meant to be experienced live. There’s a natural build progression during sets that are honestly like no other. An album like this live is truly a mammoth of a sound experience just waiting to explode. Entirely proven correctly at their recent Coachella performance prior to the weekend joining the set. If anything they proved to me that it is an absolute MUST to see them live. The album experience separately however is not quite the same. Perhaps it stems from this being the first record that completely shifts from one vibe like a multi blend pop sound to very classic dance music that feels like a once upon a time. It’ll be interesting to see this trio’s tour run to fully grasp its height of impact and I think that’s what would be worth experiencing.

Soffi tukker | WET TENNIS

WET TENNIS is unlike any project we’ve received from Sofi Tukker in the past. It is very much an elevation of their past projects and current discography. It is the most alive record that they have and the most cohesive as well. At least since their first EP Soft Animals. In this project we have multiple tracks with play on English and Portuguese. Something that feels so natural and expected from the duo. For fans it’s also necessary for these tracks as they tend to be the root and full flavor of what SF brings. Surprisingly Kakee is one of their strongest songs on the album and it is also the opener. Do not allow this to distract you from the rest of what the record has to offer. Tracks 8-11 truly showcase the Talent that has led ST to be on the rise in the dance community for so long. Aside from their solo shows they are seen popping up more frequently in the dance festivals and with their impressive continuous live DJ streams during quarantine we get a project that fulfills that chapter. What becomes a little run of the mill is the frequent use of samples in the songs or relying on covers which is a bit u clear to how it relates to their title acronym. Other than that the album itself is extremely uplifting and emits positivity and that can ultimately be appreciated.

 Bloc Party | Alpha Games

Bloc parry is a band I never dived into on my own personally until now and I did it for nostalgic reasons as I remember my mom listening to a few of their tracks growing up. Thankfully some of this album offers high energy garage band vibes which is definitely in my field house and on my roster of musical enjoyment. However this is another record where one of the best tracks is right at the beginning of the record and also was released as the first single. There is something super punchy and enjoyable about hearing a great song the through an i tail album listen and this record took that opportunity away. Along with so many other artists this year, it’s like that surprise effect for your album isn’t important. The rest of the album is still just as camp as I was expecting and full of fun grade beats. But we never get taken out of that feeling or stray away rom it to see where the full might of “alpha” would take us. This doesn’t meant the record isn’t worth a listen as they're very much fun tracks that I would love to see played live from this record. Traps leads the record as then Rough Justice shows the playfulness and might of the band height. Track four is the first of slower down tracks that truly highlights the flow the band so strongly succeeds in and evokes this feeling of nostalgia. Though I can appreciate and support some of the queer themes within the lyrics and they have gained an interest I do think I will take time to review their catalogue From now till their next record arises.
